New Laws Affecting Credit Freezes

A credit freeze is a tool that allows you to restrict access to your credit report, which in turn makes it more difficult for criminals to open a new account in your name. That’s because most creditors need to see your credit report before they approve a new account. If they can’t look at your report, they may not extend the credit.

Since September 2018 a new law has been in effect helping to prevent criminals from accessing your personal information and opening new accounts using your identity. The new law allows consumers to freeze and unfreeze their credit files free of charge. And if you are a parent or a legal guardian, you can freeze the credit files of your dependents too.
